Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 15 of 18 · 20 verses
The Supreme Mystery
Puruṣottama Yoga
What this chapter teaches
The allegory of the eternal ashvattha tree rooted above: cut through all entanglements with the axe of non-attachment and take refuge in the Supreme Person.
Chapter 15 begins with the famous allegory of the ashvattha tree (sacred fig) — an inverted cosmic tree with roots above and branches below, sustained by the three guṇas. The branches are the sense-objects and the leaves are the Vedic hymns of ritual. One must cut this tree down with the sharp axe of non-attachment (asaṅga-śastra) and seek the primal source. Krishna then reveals himself as the Puruṣottama — the Supreme Person beyond both the perishable (kṣara) and the imperishable (akṣara) — the secret of the Vedas.
