Wisdom in Action

Jñāna Karma Sannyāsa Yoga

Illustration for Chapter 4 — Wisdom in Action

What this chapter teaches

The eternal lineage of wisdom is revealed. When knowledge burns away ego, all action becomes a sacred offering. Krishna reveals his divine nature and the purpose of his earthly appearances.

Krishna reveals that this teaching was given to the sun god Vivasvat ages ago — the eternal wisdom (sanatana dharma) transmitted through generations. He explains his divine nature: whenever righteousness (dharma) declines and adharma rises, he takes birth to restore cosmic order. The chapter culminates in the teaching that the fire of spiritual knowledge burns all karma to ash — liberating the devotee through wisdom-sacrifice.
